Peated whiskey is something of a rarity in Irish whiskey production. This may seem a little strange given the abundance of peat bogs on the Emerald Isle and the fact that peat is traditionally one of the primary fuels in Ireland. When Cooley Distillery started producing whiskey they firmly believed that peat must have been used historically in Irish whiskey production and set about creating a peated expression, the result was Connemara.
Cooley whiskeys are famed for their soft sweet style and Connemara is no exception, the gentle vanilla notes are present in the Connemara whiskeys along with sweet peat undertones. This is a distinctly Irish peated whiskey - as it should be - far removed from the peated whiskies produced on Islay and elsewhere in Scotland. The range has a variety of ages and strengths - which are perfect for drinkers not quite ready for some of the more agressive peated Scotch expressions - but also includes the rather excellent cask strength Turf Mor which boasts a higher level of peat phenols - enough for any peat freak.
