The island of Islay boasts so many lauded distilleries, both active and lost, that it’s easy to overlook the less famous. Caol Ila isn’t particularly well known outside malt enthusiast circles, arguably over shadowed by the likes of Laphroaig, Ardbeg and Lagavulin. This is a shame because Caol Ila produces some sensational peated malts.
A large facility, the biggest on the island in fact, Caol Ila produces significant volumes at a very consistent standard. As such it outputs excellent whisky which is also very attractively priced. This is an important point because the dwindling stocks and strong reputations of some of its neighbours have led to inflated prices in recent years. Caol Ila on the other hand is still accessibly priced and well worth seeking out if you haven’t already tried its expressions.
