Widely available and yet still managing not to become a household name, Old Pulteney is a distillery which really deserves more attention. Admittedly Jim Murray’s praise for the 21 year old a few years ago brought a lot of publicity to that expression. Here at Whisky Marketplace we’ve made no secret of the fact that we’re rather fond of the 17 year old Old Pulteney - which is perhaps less lauded.
A characteristic of this distillery’s output is a maritime saltiness, often balanced with darker sugars as well dried and fresh fruit notes. The 12 year old is a good entry point but if you can afford to spend a little more the 17 year old is highly recommended and well worth a look.
